Australia's captain Set to Play a Major Role in Ashes Series

Test match action

The pace bowler has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chair of selectors Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches kicking off on the 21st of November in the WACA.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of taking part.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations involved, not only the physical problem, but additional elements," he commented.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he will feature a significant role. Hopefully from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

He has a history of back injuries, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from three Australian summers in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the national team for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the opening match as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches regardless. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for another day, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
