European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.

Additional Updates Reported Today

In other legal developments:

  • A federal judge has halted attempts to reduce federal homeland security funding to local governments which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The judge ruled the case was “a further instance” of linking federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city ahead of the holiday period, alongside an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to accept dozens of migrants from the US in exchange for increased assistance, after signing a formal agreement with US authorities.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has initiated legal action to demand the removal of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a wider ideology in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with historical international strategies.
