Our Top Album of the Year: The Artist's Lux Secures the Top Position.

Initially, this album may look more like a challenging academic quiz rather than a new pop record from a musician who just had a previous hit was a collaboration with an international pop icon. Divided across four separate parts and voiced in 13 tongues, we have a head-spinning classical-tinged work that delves into female mystique, spiritual ascent, and bodily change, frequently by way of the lens of various female saints. The dissolution of a relationship—a theme treated with raw honesty elsewhere—soars skyward here, supported by the constant sound of a full symphony orchestra and work from an award-winning composer within a long roll call of collaborators. The pure daring alone renders the work of contemporary pop stars appear quite laughable.

Transcending Academic Exercise

The fact that this album manages to transcend overly academic posturing is nothing short of a miracle, with sole praise going to Rosalía. While this is not the first time album to blend historical sounds and the present, the stakes are far higher here, and the tightrope walk more pronounced. What really elevates this fourth album, beyond its multilayered melodies, dense arrangements, and inherent drama, proves to be a core sense of fun. Similar to the iconic Björk during her peak, there is a captivating quality to the vocalist's singing which sweeps the listener into its tornado. When she's tearing your heart in two, you nevertheless want to stay right there for the ride.

A Prime Moment of Exuberance

This exuberant energy comes forth clearly on the stunning Italian song inspired by a saint. It luxuriates in a string-drenched melancholy over more than four minutes. Suddenly, all the music falls away, to reveal there's a gleeful laugh and a comment prior to a comically exaggerated orchestral surge crashes in with cartoonish impact. The song then shifts to the wild single featuring galloping strings, an imposing choral group, and a cameo appearance from none other than Björk.

"The magic with Lux lies in you never exactly know—nor want to know—where it will go to next."

Nearly every track finishes in a completely different point from where it started. A track examines the transient trappings of fame with a delicate orchestration before disintegrating into digital chaos. Another, a cut echoing her earlier rhythmic work begins out dark and brooding, with menacing vocals, until sudden flamenco handclaps and a heavenly chorus arrive to smooth its jagged corners.

The Balance Of Experiment & Accessibility

A key achievement on the album involves straddling the gap between radical experimentation and mainstream appeal. This is little surprise that the album has become her highest-charting release to crack the upper reaches of key markets: its heart contains a suite of truly undeniable hits. One track sung primarily in English builds on a refrain that seems to collect increasingly infectious hooks while it spins skyward. This feat is echoed on a different expansive track that grows and contracts, intertwining layered tunes as a complex tapestry.

  • A dance-infused number charms with its playful, Disney-adjacent drama and an anthemic chorus.
  • In its words, it aligns the cultural impact of other breakup songs, lambasting a former lover labeled an "psychological bully".
  • Throughout the album, the singing have a sharp edge, akin to a storybook character concealing a blade: "Gold medal in acting like a motherfucker / You have the podium of disappointment."

An Opulent Feast for the Ears

Lux represents pop on a grand level, a hungry grasp for high artistry in an era of impending AI-generated sameness. It eschews solipsism in favor of sublime transcendence, crafting an over-the-top spectacle that masterfully controls its own inherent excess. This is an abundant source of buried gems that takes patience to fully explore but never feels like hard work. While some major releases of 2025 felt like feasting on scraps, this record is a lavish banquet at which the characters at it, some tipsy on holy drink, flit from conversations about historical saints, the galvanizing feeling of soul-shattering grief, and common stories about hopeless partners. In essence, it's a contemporary musical from pop's truly endlessly inventive practitioner.
